Apple vs. Microsoft: Branding, Ads & Influence in Tech
This project explores the branding and advertising influence of Apple and Microsoft in the tech industry, focusing on the early 1990s when the Macintosh first launched. It is inspired by Susan Kare, the original designer behind the Macintosh icons, whose work became a symbol of innovation during that era. I studied her iconic design style and reimagined it by creating a packaging and branding concept under her name. The project features a stamp kit that includes rubber stamps made from MDF, timber, and rubber, using precise laser-cutting techniques to replicate her original icon designs. The kit also comes with a blank book for users to create their own compositions and a guide on how to use the stamps creatively. The packaging design pays homage to the Macintosh era’s aesthetic, incorporating two classic typefaces—Geneva and Chicago—that were integral to Apple’s branding at the time. Through this project, I aimed to celebrate Susan Kare’s contribution to digital design and show how her work continues to influence branding across the tech industry.
